Lyon is the third-largest city and second-largest urban area of France. It is located at the confluence of the rivers Rhône and Saône, about 500km southeast of Paris. Former capital of the Gauls at the time of the Roman Empire, Lyon is now recognized for its cuisine and gastronomy, as well as historical and architectural landmarks: the districts of Old Lyon, the Fourvière hill, the Presqu'île and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse that are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Its central position in France makes it very easy to reach in by any mean of transportation:
- By train: Lyon has three large train stations (Part Dieu, Perrache & Vaise stations) that are linked to many French and European cities (e.g. Paris-Lyon = 2h; Geneva-Lyon = 2h).
- By plane: The Lyon Saint Exupéry airport is situated about 20km east of the city center and is link to the main train station (Part Dieu) by the Rhône Express tram (less that 30min trip; departure every 15 minutes from 4.25am to midnight). It is connected to most major European cities.
-By car: The central position of Lyon makes it also easy to reach by car. But note that, in the city, it is difficult to find a parking spot and parking fees are expensive. Parking close to the conference venue is much cheaper/easier.
Public transport in Lyon: In your conference bag, you will be given five daily passes that will allow you to use freely the public transports of the city during all the conference.
Visa requirements: Please, check your individual circumstances for entry to Italy. If you need an official invitation to get your visa contact the 19th ISO organizers (iso2022@univ-lyon1.fr)
